About Making Space
Join Perth Festival Visual Arts Program Associate Gemma Weston, in partnership with Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, and learn all about curating.
Over the summer create your own artwork using collage or assemblage. Bring your work to this workshop focussed on exhibition design and curation and, working with your artwork and the group, you’ll be part of presenting an exhibition.
The resulting exhibition will be on display from 18 – 22 February at Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery’s Dr Harold Schenberg Study Centre as part of Perth Festival 2020.
Your Artwork
The Perth Festival 2020 explores all things connected to home, our communities and the everyday rituals we use to transform them. At Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, the Perth Festival exhibition The Long Kiss Goodbye explores some these ideas through the medium of collage or assemblage, making extraordinary things from very ordinary materials.
To participate in the exhibition, you will need to create an artwork that explores these themes, using these mediums.
To be exhibited, your artwork must:
Be two dimensional, or wall-based. Artworks can incorporate any media, or any combination of media – for example, printmaking, painting, drawing, wall-based sculpture – but should respond to a broad definition of ‘collage’ or ‘assemblage’: combining imagery or material from different sources to create something new.
Exceed no more than 60cm x 60cm, or weigh no more than 1.5kg. A single work may include multiple parts - e.g.: a series, diptych or triptych, but the total surface area should be not more than 0.36 m2, and each individual piece should weigh no more than 1kg.
Be exhibited unframed, although canvas stretchers can be used.
Be accompanied by a short artist statement of up to 50 words, to be submitted with an image of the artwork, by Saturday 8 February 2020.
Who You Are
You are an artist aged between 15 – 18 years old (at time of application) with an interest in learning about how exhibitions are made, and the role of the curator.

Cost: Participation is free, but you need to cover your own materials cost for the work created. If this is a barrier to your involvement, please let us know and we can discuss potential solutions.

How to Apply
Applications for Making Space will open on 1 November 2019.
To apply for Making Space you will need to:
Complete an application form
Upload up to four images documenting previous artworks. Images should be no more than 2MB each.
Read, understand and accept the Terms & Conditions – Making Space with your parent / guardian (if you are Under 18 at the time of application)
We welcome responses to the 150 word questions to be submitted as an audio or video file (max. duration 3 minutes) if that is your preference. Please upload your file in the specified File Upload Section below.
Under 18?
Please note that applicants aged under 18 must ensure they have the permission of their parent/guardian before submitting an application. The Parents / Guardians of chosen participants will be required to sign a hard copy version of the Project Terms & Conditions that gives consent for the participant’s involvement in the program.
