About Drug Aware YCulture Metro

Drug Aware YCulture Metro is a youth arts grants program that has been administrated by Propel Youth Arts WA for over 15 years, in partnership with Healthway to promote the Drug Aware message. YCulture Metro is a project funding and skills development initiative providing arts grants of up to $4,000 for people aged between 12 and 26.

This program is designed for early career artists who would like to plan and coordinate their own projects across any artistic medium. All Drug Aware YCulture Metro projects must show evidence of skill development for the young participants involved and include formal mentorship from a skilled representative in the chosen artform or industry. All project ideas must come from young people and the application process must be led by the young project organisers.

Funded activities could include but are not limited to:

  • Live music events

  • Creative workshops

  • Visual arts exhibitions

  • Performances and theatre developments.

As an entry-level grants program for young and emerging artists, Propel Youth Arts WA staff provides advice and support to young people through the grant application and acquittal process. In 2021, a total of 12 grants were awarded to talented and driven young artists among a diverse range of artforms.

YCulture Metro Assessment Panel

The YCulture Metro Assessment Panel undertakes a peer-review of all Drug Aware YCulture Metro grant applications and is made up of emerging local arts professionals. Being on the Assessment Panel provides a great opportunity for artists and arts workers to gain experience on the other side of the funding table!

As a panel member you will be required to review applications based on the provided assessment criteria. Propel staff, including the Project Officer, will be available to guide and support the process but the final funding decisions are made by the YCulture Metro Assessment Panel.

There are 4 application intake rounds throughout the year. At the close of each round, 3 panellists will be nominated to assess each application. The number of applications received per funding round can vary between 2 and 7. Panellists will be provided with online links to the applications, along with an assessment matrix, and will then be given 2 weeks to assess each application using the matrix. After this, the panellists will meet in person or remotely, to discuss their assessments and make decisions on which applications should be approved for funding.
