Join artist and educator Jess Lewis for a custom workshop designed for people interested in moving their bodies in new ways! No prior dance experience necessary.
The workshop will focus on 3 areas:
- An introduction to basic contemporary dance technique
- Structured improvisation, in which participants will respond to cues and stimuli to help them play and experiment with their own way of moving
- Creative tasking, where participants will be guided to develop their own short movement sequences

About the artist: Jess Lewis is a founding member of Perth collective Unkempt Dance and has choreographed, produced and performed award-winning works with Unkempt both locally and nationally. This includes commissions to make and present work for the 2014 National Architecture Convention (WA) and WAAPA’s Link Dance Company with performances in Perth and Montpelier, France. Jess has also performed multiple works for Spare Parts Puppet Theatre since 2013, including a 2016 National Tour of The Little Prince. A passionate teacher of contemporary, ballet and creative dance, Jess has led regional and metro dance workshops for STEPS Youth Dance Company, Buzz Dance Theatre, Country Arts WA, Spare Parts Puppet Theatre and The Contemporary Dance Company of Western Australia (Co3), as well as a range of schools across the metropolitan area. She currently runs the organisation NuDance, which caters to very young and enthusiastic movers. Jess holds a Graduate Diploma of Education in primary teaching and currently works as a primary school teacher at Cloverdale Primary School, and Therapy Assistant at the Autism Association of WA.
This workshop is organised with Propel Youth Arts WA for Winter Peaks, Paper Mountain's inaugural winter program. It is supported by the Department of Local Government, Sports and Culture Industries.
