FRESH BEATS: Longform Improvisation & The Harold

  • West Australian Ballet Centre 134 Whatley Crescent Maylands Australia (map)

When the only rule is ‘there are no rules’, how can you create an engaging piece of longform improvisation?

In 1967, Improv pioneer Del Close developed The Harold – a format which integrated games and scenes around a theme. It is still performed all over the world in myriad variations. The beauty of The Harold is that it appears to be a firm structure requiring strict compliance, but in the hands of creative improvisers it becomes a wild, organic creature.

In FRESH BEATS, you’ll learn to follow a single suggestion to a theme, which will then give birth to a long show. It will explore how laughter and melancholy interact with intriguing characters and compelling stories to touch an audience.

You’ll learn some Harold jargon and techniques, like ‘openings’, ‘games’ and ‘edits’. Then you’ll put it all to one side and go where the improv takes you.

The final week of the course will culminate in a show for friends and family, held at the stunning West Australian Ballet Centre.
