Applications are open for young people to join our Youth Steering Committee
The Youth Steering Committee is an opportunity to work with the Minister for Youth and the Australian Government to deliver Engage! A strategy to include young people in the decisions we make.
The Youth Steering Committee is made up of 14 members between the ages of 12 and 25 from across Australia.
You can apply for one of 7 vacant positions for a term of up to 2 years.
The other 7 positions on the committee are current members who are staying on.
What will I do as a member?
The Youth Steering Committee works with the Office for Youth on the Australian Government’s new strategy Engage! A strategy to include young people in the decisions we make.
This includes advising us about the design and delivery of actions in Engage!
You will also team up with us to advise the Australian Government about policies and programs for young people.
Members get training and professional development so that you feel comfortable and confident participating in meetings.
The Youth Steering Committee is supported by the Australian Youth Affairs Coalition (AYAC) and the Office for Youth.
Who can apply?
If you are aged between 12 and 24 you can apply to join the Youth Steering Committee.
You don’t need to have prior experience on an advisory group or board or as a volunteer to join.
We are looking for applications from young people with diverse backgrounds and lived experiences, including if you:
live in metropolitan, regional, remote and rural areas
are culturally and linguistically diverse
are First Nations
experience disability
are neurodiverse
identify as LGBTQI+.
To join the committee you must be available to attend at least 1 online meeting around every 2 months.
You will also be expected to attend 3 meetings in Canberra, including the first meeting in the week commencing 12 August 2024.
Your travel, accommodation and meals will be paid for by AYAC. You will also be paid an honorarium in recognition of your contributions.

The online application form will be open from 23 April 2024 and will close at 5:00 pm (AEST) on 19 May 2024.

The Office for Youth and AYAC will conduct interviews with the shortlisted applicants in June.
