Jotterbook Flowers
Carrissa Wu
I grew up in Singapore and moved to Perth about 10 years ago. Arts and crafts have always been my passion and way of showing care for people. I love observing and making the intricate details of flowers because it reminds me of how beautifully, purposefully and wonderfully made people are too.
Paper flowers handmade with you in mind. Bespoke bouquets, accessories and decorations. All products are coated with a water-resistant sealant making them more durable and keeping their colours intact. I try to incorporated recycled materials in my work (e.g. styrofoam packing peanuts); this is a growing area of exploration.
Growing up in Singapore, I would learn the names of as many flowers as I could find in my neighbourhood, and record them through drawings and photographs. One evening I was sitting at the dinner table when my mum and dad noticed that I had absentmindedly twisted a paper napkin into a rose. After moving to Perth in 2010, I studied Fine Arts at Uni and did a project where I made clay roses for several months wherever I went (in the bus, in class, out with friends...), resulting in 99 rose sculptures. In 2016, my now-husband's family taught me how to make roses from dyed coffee filters to decorate my sister-in-law's wedding arch. When I returned to Perth I finally realised that this flower-making bug was not going to leave me anytime soon. I have been making paper flowers and holding workshops for events and fundraising around Perth since 2017. This year I have a special focus on creating beautifully detailed products celebrating the joyful shapes and colours found in nature close to home.
