Malayin - Culture | Theme Introduction with Indigo Ellis

Indigo_Ellis2.jpg

Each day of KickstART Virtual has a specific theme, as decided upon by the Youth Week WA Planning Committee and our Creative Coordinator Kobi Arthur Morrison.

The theme for Monday 25 May is Malayin - Culture, and Indigo Ellis will be the day’s theme-setter.

Think of all the different cultures around Perth, all of the different music and languages and art influences. Join Indigo for her response and introduction to this particular theme.

About Indigo Ellis

Indigo Ellis is a 14 year old, Noongar Nunga girl. She has been performing around Perth from the age of 7.  She has performed at numerous Naidoc events over the last 2 years as well as numerous festivals, events and competitions both locally and nationally with many accolades to her name.  In 2019, Indigo started writing her own music and dreams of being an International singer/songwriter.  Indigo’s first original song, “HOME” was nominated for 2 awards at the 2019 Naidoc Music Awards. The Jason Bartlett Best vocalist Award and the Best Emerging Artist Award, she was the youngest artist nominated and she won both of these awards, which she says was an honour. This song is about her strong connection to her culture and about finding her lost connections through her music.  She wrote this song with the help of Charley Caruso and Della Rae Morrison. Della helped Indigo express her words in to Noongar language because this was important for Indigo to incorporate into her first song.  Indigo is currently working on completing her album with the plan to release it in 2020.

About KickstART Virtual
22 - 29 May 2020

For 10 years KickstART has been the flagship event for Youth Week WA, however things are a little different in 2020.

As a response to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent live event cancellations, Propel Youth Arts WA is presenting KickstART Virtual: a week-long online festival of free workshops, talks, and hangouts, specifically tailored to young creative people in WA, and developed by Creative Coordinator Kobi Arthur Morrison with the Youth Week WA Planning Committee.

KickstART takes place on Noongar Boodjar. We acknowledge the ownership and are grateful for the custodianship of the people who originate from the Whadjuk nation. We acknowledge the traditional owners of country throughout Australia. We pay our respect to Elders past and present. We are committed to reconciliation and supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people.

KickstART Virtual is presented by Propel Youth Arts WA and is funded by the Government of Western Australia through the Department of Communities and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries. KickstART is also sponsored by Lotterywest and the City of Perth.
