The Tide is Rising.
Mandurah’s Riptide Youth Performance Company presents our next mammoth project: a series of short new plays written and directed by members of the ensemble, called Tide Tales. The works will premiere at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre from 18th -21st September 2019.
2019 has been a big year for Riptide, with the company having already premiered our second piece fully devised by the ensemble, Blue Portal Road; performed at Crab Fest, the Fairbridge Festival; and Mandurah Performing Arts Centre’s new YOU ARE Youth Arts Festival. As well as upskilling with a masterclass program, funded by the City of Mandurah, we are just about to get busier with our next exciting production.
Tide Tales is a new initiative for us to develop the playwrighting and directorial ambitions of our ensemble members. The project begun at the start of the year with our four writers Ruby Liddelow, Lexie Sleet, Shekaila Walker and Max Baker sneaking off to Sydney to write four new plays at the Australian Theatre for Young People. They returned with an eclectic bunch of plays, which had public readings at the YOU ARE Youth Arts Festival in May.
Having cast the plays with local young performing talent, four first-time local directors; Lexie Sleet, Teaghan Lowry, Tristen Pateman and Courtney Brown, are stepping up to get these plays staged. Rehearsals are already underway, coached by experienced Perth director, Jeffrey Jay Fowler.
ABOUT THE PLAYS
Rust Town
The year is unknown, time has been kinda hard to keep track of since the apocalypse...So how does a small settlement, still clinging to a political system of old, imitate a democratic election without just taking over by force? Written by Max Baker and directed by Lexie Sleet, this is a satirical comedy that’s asking bigger questions than it seems.
French Onion Soup
Written by Lexie Sleet and directed by Tristen Pateman. Oscar has just turned sixteen and life as he knows it has ended – it's time to grow up, be a man and finally admit his feelings for his best friend Jess, but when it all goes wrong, how does he bring everything back together to make amends and heal?
Critic
After a short interval, a darker work written by Shekaila Walker and directed by Courtney Brown, will take to the stage – Critic. Imagine a world that constantly has you on edge, gives you worries and irrational fears of things that could go wrong... now imagine it’s all in your head. Critic explores the lives of three young people living with anxiety.
Eva DuBivoir and the Quest for the Bloody Truth
Rounding off this whirlwind night of originality is Ruby Liddelow’s new play. In this unapologetically cheesy panty-mime Eva DuBivoir, a young and impressionable vagina, sets out on a quest to find out what’s up with the creepy Tampons she works for. Teaming up with a woke AF menstrual cup, they work together to bring down Tampons Inc once and for all! Directed by Teaghan Lowry, this hilarious adventure will delight you.
