International Art Space Artistic Director, Marco Marcon defines the program as a diverse and layered exchange with artists encouraged to explore the symbolic, ecological and socio-economic similarities between the two regions, “Rural and remote communities in Australia and the Nordic countries are often situated in highly distinctive, strikingly beautiful but also exacting natural settings. In both regions the landscape plays a fundamental role in shaping cultural identity and creating economic wealth," he says.

The decision to place artists in regional and remote locations is motivated by the fact that even small and seemingly isolated towns are affected by global economic, environmental and social forces. The interplay between the strong sense of local identity, which is typical of these communities, and the effects of globalisation provides a fertile ground for artists to explore.

The spaced 3 artists are Robyn Backen (NSW), Michelle Eistrup (Denmark), Gustav Hellberg (Sweden), Deborah Kelly (NSW), Danius Kesminas (Vic), Tor Lindstrand (Sweden), Heidi Lunabba (Finland), Dan McCabe (WA), Linda Persson (Sweden), Keg de Souza (NSW), Sam Smith (NSW).

There are a number of special events planned, including a lecture series, guided tours, and a panel discussion followed by artist talks for the opening day of spaced 3 (18 Aug). Visit the website for details.
