Small, delicate and ephemeral, this exhibition of works are a conversation in colour. Meticulously constructed out of paper, soft woods and metal foils rendered in gouache, they are infused with ideas of landscape and explore the relationship that develops between colour, form, structure and light. 

Sarah Thornton-Smith is an artist-designer whose fascination with colour strikes a chord in her first solo show. Designed as part of her ongoing conversation in colour & meticulously constructed out of paper, soft woods & metal foils rendered in gouache, her works are small in nature, delicate & ephemeral.

Harmonious colour palettes that are derived directly from her observation of colour in nature, combined with the influence of music, create connections that explore kinetic & visual play. This occurs inherently in Thornton-Smith’s compositions, with visual elements interacting in her constructions echoing many experiences & memories.

Some of these echoes are from her childhood. Arriving from Singapore as a teen, she was struck by the harshness of light in WA, which contrasted markedly with her experiences of light bound by tropical lushness. Light that is integral to the perception of colour, combined with her mixed background of Malay, Chinese & Australian cultures, have contributed to her lifelong fascination with colour.

Through their intimate nature, Thornton-Smith’s works highlight the preciousness of memory or experience & create connections that can lead to conversations about colour & its myriad of attributes & influence.
