Picnic at Hanging Rock

  • State Theatre Centre of Western Australia 172-174 William Street Northbridge Australia (map)

The rock is a nightmare, and nightmares belong in the past.

Tom Wright’s adaptation of the classic novel is sure to excite and perplex a whole new generation, proving once again that no one can resist the lure of Hanging Rock.

Australia, 1900. An ancient land becomes the site of an impossible mystery. A group of schoolgirls and their teachers venture out into the sundrenched landscape, only for four of their number to disappear forever.

The subsequent investigation creates more questions than answers. One of the girls is found with no memory of what happened to her or her classmates, another succumbs to hysteria for no apparent reason. Those close to the missing girls begin to meet with unfortunate ends and it becomes clear that this is no ordinary disappearance.

Matthew Lutton, award-winning director and former Associate Director of Black Swan, returns to the company in its 25th year to direct this seminal Australian story, a thrilling new co-production with Malthouse Theatre.
