Ships in the Grr

  • The Blue Room Theatre 53 James Street Northbridge Australia (map)

Across two separate nights, a selection of the finest wordsmiths (including international storytelling darling Stuart Bowden) will bring their works to life alongside talented musicians for a special FRINGE WORLD edition of Ships in the Night as part of Grr Nights.

In the darkness of the late night, enjoy the shelter of the Grr as these artists perform their words in response to the themes of apocalypse and rebirth, shipwreck and rescue, ecological collapse, and unfathomable repair.

Grr Nights is an intimate performance festival run in collaboration with The Blue Room Theatre. For two weeks Grr will host thirteen unique shows: from eco-cabaret to lovelorn clowns, from indie-pop choirs to spoken word, from dance to community debate and dinners.

Outside of FRINGE WORLD, Ships in the Night is a quarterly gig that showcases Perth's finest local wordsmiths, who bring their work to life on stage alongside talented musicians in a fresh, intimate context.

“It’s a wonderful showcase and platform for literary talent from Perth’s finest wordsmiths and beyond, and was a perfect introduction into [this] world” - The Ink Grid, review of Ships in the Night #13

THE DETAILS

Friday 12 February: Scott Sandwich & Jacob Diamond

Scott Sandwich is a Sydney-based writer and performance poet creating rants, lectures and occasionally some awkward hip-hop, telling stories about dates, death and the apocalypse. His work has been featured nationally and in galleries around Finland, Norway, Sweden, Lithuania and Benin. Last year, Scott co-wrote and performed in The Epic (returning for FRINGE WORLD 2016) to sold-out audiences. Musician Jacob Diamond was named Best Folk Act at the 2015 WA Music Awards, and in the same year, scored first place in The Big Splash band competition. Diamond is an alt-folk oddity with careful attention to detail, intriguing crowds around the country with shimmering melodies and a general finesse since underage open mic-ing at age 16.

Friday 19 February: Stuart Bowden & Sarah Tout

Multi-award-winning theatre-maker Stuart Bowden recently returned to live in Melbourne after spending five years in London. This year he will also perform at FRINGE WORLD with Wil Greenway in The Lounge Room Confabulators and solo in Wilting in Reverse. Bowden’s previous shows Before Us and She Was Probably Not A Robot had Perth audiences absolutely rapt in 2015 and 2014 respectively. Musician Sarah Tout is a Perth-based guitarist and songwriter who has been dabbling in chilled, original, ‘folkgaze’ sounds and performing solo around Perth since 2010. Tout is also a vocalist in Perth folk/pop group Simone and Girlfunkle.
