Unsettle is an exhibition of new sculptural and installation works by three queer artists Liam Colgan, Kate Power and Derek Sargent. Unsettle examines how these different artists problematise current notions of sexuality and additionally inspect the dialogue between sexuality and ‘spatial’ art practices.
Philosopher Michel Foucault’s investigation into sexuality served as the catalyst for this exhibition. Foucault argues that the word ‘sexuality’ gives ground on which to fight on behalf of “homosexuality”. He states: “it is not enough to liberate sexuality; we also have to liberate ourselves… from the very notion of sexuality”.
From this idea, the artists critically engage with ways of extending beyond 'sexuality' without using language or motifs typically related to it. Unsettle purposefully blurs the current boundaries between the sexual and non-sexual to explore new ways of making.
