PHYSICS, JAZZ AND THE AGE OLD QUESTION – WHAT IF?

On the eve of her 30th birthday, Naomi has it all. A high paying job, a good-looking boyfriend and a great social life. But an unexpected run in with an ex leaves her wondering - what if things had turned out differently? 

Written and directed by Perth’s Jessica Messenger (The Standover Man), Multiverse Theory in D melds theoretical physics and sultry jazz in a darkly comedic exploration of dissatisfaction with modern life.

The play explores three different versions of Naomi's life: the high flying career woman, the baby-wearing Earth Mother, and the sultry jazz singer. As Naomi is catapulted from one version of her life to another, she begins to concoct a plan. What if she can cease to exist in one reality and take up residence in another? However, not all is quite what it seems on the other side of the black hole...

Multiverse Theory in D examines mental illness, loss of identity, grief and regret all rolled into a screwball situational comedy, perfumed with playful jazz music. 

“It may seem a little strange to treat such serious topics as depression and suicide in such a whimsical fashion. But sometimes there is nothing better for your mental health than a shot of dark humour on the rocks, with a twist of jazz to spice it up. I’m hoping Multiverse will be just the right mix of pathos and pith to suit the palette...but whatever your drink of choice I can guarantee it will be one hell of a cocktail,” said Messenger.

Starring a strong quartet in all singing roles, Perth actors Erin Hutchinson, Esther Longhurst, Nick Maclaine and Josh Walker will be pulled from one world to the next to bring you a poignant piece of theatre exploring modern gender roles. 

Developed with assistance from The Ground Floor Program (Stages WA and The Blue Room Theatre), Jessica Messenger's Multiverse Theory in D explores the age old question - what if?
